Lane Cove West

A family of five approached ArtMade to extend their existing house to accommodate their growing family.

The existing house had a one storey difference between the main building and the backyard. ArtMade strategically used this lower level to locate a new living room with the aim of easing access from the indoor living spaces to the backyard. This also allowed the family to maintain "tree" views from the entrance of the house, and over the roof of the extension.

The placement of the living room away from the existing building also creates a courtyard in between. This courtyard is also surrounded by a connecting kitchen and the existing double height family room. This functions as a multipurpose extension of the kitchen for the outdoor dining or an extension of the family room for kids to play under passive supervision from the surrounding rooms. This space also doubles up as a welcoming feature when the house is accessed through the stepped landscape in the side setbacks.

The living room steps down, respecting the natural slope of the topography, with the level difference used as an opportunity to create amphitheater styled seating with built in storage.

Steel construction and glazing has been proposed for the majority of the extension to allow for maximum northern solar access and ease of construction. A covered verandah on the western façade protects the living room in summer.

This extension has been proposed under a CDC application and is expected to be approved in the next few weeks.
